UN Package Markings
How to read the UN mark on a package built for regulated or hazardous goods.
A UN mark identifies a package certified to a performance standard, and every element in the string carries meaning: the packaging type, the performance level, the specific gravity or mass it was tested to, the test pressure where relevant, the year of manufacture, the authorising country, and the manufacturer code.
Packages that carry the mark have been drop, stack, and (where applicable) pressure tested to that level. If a product is regulated as hazardous for transport, the package has to be certified for it — this is not an area where a close match is good enough.
